WordPress powers over 30 percent of the web, including some of the Internet’s biggest enterprise sites. On Tuesday, WordPress VIP Go experienced an issue that left multiple sites with nothing but a photo of a succulent.
At 17:27 UTC, WordPress VIP announced ongoing issues with the platform, citing 503 errors and missing theme files. This caused many sites to experience the default theme.
Affected sites included TechCrunch, WooCommerce, Rolling Stone, and BBC America. The team was quick to release a response to the issue:

TechCrunch put out a post about the incident saying, “The company offered a comment to TechCrunch this morning, noting, ‘We’re currently experiencing issues affecting sites hosted on the VIP Go platform. This is affecting multiple sites. Our team is working swiftly to resolve this across all affected sites.’ Essentially the same thing it posted to its own service site this morning.”
At 20:12 UTC, all sites were up and running, and WordPress VIP Go support was addressing any remaining issues on a per-site basis.
It’s important to remember that this wasn’t an issue with WordPress itself, but rather one vendor in the whole ecosystem. The team was quick to respond and worked to fix the issue as fast as possible.
